Impedance is a unit of measurement for the resistance or opposition a circuit exhibits to a current when a voltage is applied. The electric resistance between the two electrodes grows according to the cell volume as it travels through the aperture. The standard technique for determining the total quantity of red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets is the impedance principle.

3-part automated differential analyzers rely on impedance technology to count and separate blood cells on the basis of size (cells suspended in an ionic fluid equivalent to their size as they pass through an aperture and cells are separated according to their cell type based on their size, with each peak representing a different cell type.
